Matariki

LI: To use your smart searching skills to find information that tells others what Matariki is.

Today we were learning about what Matariki is. Matariki is a family of 7 stars and is the Maori new year. Matariki is a time to remember the past, learn about traditions and start new beginnings.

Te Reo Challenge #7 - Matariki

LI: To draw and label the Matariki cluster of stars

This week our Te Reo challenge set by Miss Pryde was to draw and label the Matariki cluster of stars. Matariki is the Maori new year, a time for family and new beginnings.

Careers - Cook

LI: To create a DLO about a job you found interesting by taking a careea quest

This week we were learning about careers. I like careers because I get to see the possbile jobs I could do when I grow up. I want to be a cook when I grow up. This is because I like food, and I enjoy cooking food in my own time. My favorite food is butter chicken. I want to be a restaurant owner, so other people can buy my food. I like cooking, so this will be a good job for me. This subject is interesting, and my favorite part about this topic, was all the choices I had.

Tech

Today at tech me and the eothe year 8’s we were coding the mbots to make a stairway with a maker. Today we had to try and make the mbot draw a star.
Then we got chalk and started drawing stars on the stars outside. Then we started to decorate our star. When we finished our star we pretended to be the mbot and went in a star shape walking on the lines. The reason we did stars is because it was matariki week.

Statistical Investigation: Kowhaiwhai designs

LI: To carry out a statistical investigation across PBS to find the most popular kawhaiwahi design.

Our group worked collaboratively to carry out a statistical
investigation to help Miss Pryde choose the winning kowhaiwhai
design for our PBS Te Reo blog. When we asked the students the designs on the DLO were the most popular. If you click on the link you will see all the kowhaiwhai designs our class created.

Here is a link to all the kowhaiwhai designs

Periscopes

L.I. To explain how periscopes work

Mr Johnston came and taught us  what periscopes are, how they are used and uses them. We found out that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. That means if the light hits the mirror at 45 degrees it reflects the light back at 45 degrees. It was fun because if light goes into a mirror it can bounce back.

Light Facts

LT: To share 5 facts about light that we find interesting.

We worked collaboratirely to create a DLO that shows facts about light .one facts that
interests me is light will travel in a completely staright line.

Robotics T2W10

Learning Intention: To use infared sensors to follow the line.

Today at tech for robotics, we learnt about using infared sensors, to code our M bot to follow the line. We were making our mbots follow the line shape of the figure 8. We also went over the Binary learning we did last week, this is the way robots, computers and other technology work. I first started by choosing the code blocks I needed, they were the most important ones in the photo above, But before we did our task we made sure our M bots were working like making sure the M bots wheel's were tight enough and not loose.

6 x 3 Math Strategy

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to answer the question.
First we had to find what numbers we need to use, so if there were 6 eagles and there were 3 sections, we know there are 6 groups of 3. Then to find the answer I added up all the groups of 3 to get 18.

Evaluating a Text

LI: To read the information in the text, think about what you have read and form an
opinion

We read the story ‘The Protest March’ then made connections between what is
happening in the world now. We used the information in the story and our prior
knowledge to help us form an opinion.

How to make hot cake

LI: To structure and write a procedural text

For writing we have been learning how to write a procedural text. To do this we used the recipe we followed at Tech. Thisprocedure tells the reader how to make hot cakes. Before we wrote this we worked collaboratively to order the pictures Mrs Anderson took of us making the hotcakes. Once we had done that we matched each photo with a verb. A verb is an action word and tells anyone following the recipe what they need to do. After that we use the verbs as sentence startersand collaboratively wrote a list of instructions.

Elephant dung

Today our non fiction reading was about how elephant dung is used to make paper. I learnt lots of interesting fact. Did you know that an elephant produces 50kg of dung per day? In Thailand and Sri Lanka paper makers collect the dung in sacks and it then gets cleaned in a boiler and goes through a machine to make it thinner.

Robotics at Tamaki College

Today for tech we were learning coding, on M block with Mrs Ferguson at Tamaki College. We were coding an M bot. Our challenge was to code the M bot, to move in a square. We also included a victory dance, and song, for our success, at the end of the program. I also used indicators, to show which direction, I was going in. My favorite part of the robotics, was watching my M bot, process my code (watching my robot move). I also liked programming it, because I learnt new types of moves, to put in my program to make my robot move. This was very fun, because I learnt how to code a robot.
