SLJ Week 1 Activity 4

LI: To create a piece of insect art.

This week for our activity 4, from a summer learning journey. We were inspired by art creations by Raku Inoue . We went outside and collected leaves, twigs, and other plant debris to create our own insect images that we thought could make an insect out of native wood or other fresh , uneven , dead plants . Something i found interesting about doing this activity was exploring through the native in our school and being able to be creative and find plants or sticks twigs that i thought could make a creative insect.I found it quite hard to find my items to create my insect because i was thinking about to much insects so i went for a simple one and chose to do a stick insect . I enjoyed this activity because I got to explore with my friends to find my insects items and I got to hear what they were doing and it gave me ideas . Here are three interesting things about stick insects : Stick insects have eyes but there vision is a bit poor but they don't ears but they can sense important sounds , It takes about 8 months for  stick insects to hatch  from there eggs , Stick insects can live upto 5 years but female stick insects can live as twice as male stick insects live .

SLJ Week 1 Activity 1

LI: To collect materials needed to successfully complete our weekly superpower building missions with Nano Girl.

This morning LS2 worked in groups with our Year 4 students to help them create their first Summer Learning Journey blog posts. PBS are still at school this week so finding some of the materials we needed for our treasure hunt was easy. Our challenge is going to be able to find all the materials we need at home now. I found this activity very easy because I am looking forward to make something cool.

What would you make using these items?    `

Operation Christmas Drop

LI: To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.

This week for research  we learn about the operation christmas drop. For the last 68 years the men and women of the US air force who are based at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam have been using a pilot training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 60 remote islands that surround Guam. Operation Christmas Drop allows the people living in these remote islands to sustain a better life and the communities to flourish.I think this is a great way to help others and make a difference in peoples lives. These people are really grateful and happy to receive the Christmas Drop.

Exploring our national current events

 LI: To identify author’s purpose.

Authors write for a purpose (reason). These reasons are to persuade, inform or entertain (PIE). Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map.

Provocation: Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?

LI: To identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion?

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that infomration to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence. The thing I found interesting is that Michal Baker is on Tv every morning

Weighty Challenge

L.I: Is to find the most efficient strategy to find the answer

This term for week 5 we were getting into more challenging questions in maths. We had a variety of questions that tested our skills on how to work with other people we dont normally work with. We were in separate groups that had a maximum of 7 people. Our groups had to work collaboratively together to find the answer to a problem or give feedback to our group. The thing that I really liked about this weeks maths is how i got to work with new people that I know i work really well with now. It also gave me an opportunity to work with new people other then my friends.

Main Idea/Embarrassment

L.I To find out the main idea

This DLO is about the Main Ideas in the book this book is called the Embarrassment poem. I worked with Akuhata. We needed to read the book twice to find out the main details that will help others and yourself understand the main Idea. As you can see in this DLO that we think that the MAIN IDEA is knowing how to handle Embarrassment. Working with my friends was really fun and enjoying because we shared our ideas and we were collaborating, working as a team. The thing that i liked about this poem is how it tell us the secret to not be embarrassment like for an example you can jest laugh
it all out till the people that is laughing at you has left.

The 3 Laws of Inertia

 LI: To learn about Inertia

This week we learnt about Inertia, Inertia is a force of physics. There are 3 laws of Inertia. The three are Inertia of Rest, Inertia of Motion and Inertia of Direction. Inertia is the tendency to resist a change of motion. You experience Inertia all the time, for example when in a car and the car suddenly stops you jerk forward because of the change of velocity or speed. For this activity Chris ,Lukah , Sakina & Haylee and I worked collaboratively to create this DLO. Something we found interesting was that Inertia was an everyday thing we experienced but we never really noticed.

Elections

LI: To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice.

To decide which political party I would vote for I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision. If I was 18 I would vote for National because they would provide authorities special powers to deal with young offenders. This means if National Won the election in my electorate Kanawaljit Singh Bakshi would be our member of parliament and Judith Collins would become the Prime Minister.

Wise choices explanation

 LI: To write an explanation.

Why it is important to make wise

choices.

How many times have you dropped plastic on the ground?

Because people are being careless, sea animals are getting sick or dying from eating plastic. When people don’t put their plastic in the bin it will go down our drains and end up in the ocean.

Sea animals eat the plastic because they think it is food. This can be very harmful to them. An example of this is if a turtle swallows a plastic bag it could stop them from breathing or being able to eat, then they may end up dying.

We can all help to stop this problem getting worse by making sure we put our plastic rubbish in the bin.

This week we wrote an explanation about Why it is important to make wise choices.
My explanation is about the problems caused by plastic pollution. I think we all need to make sure that we do the right thing and put our plastic rubbish in the bin to keep our oceans clean and our sea creatures safe.

Sunflower Painting

LI: To paint a still life of sunflowers in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.

In this DLO above, I have learnt to draw what I see and make use of all the space available. To get the different shades I mixed colours to make light and dark tones of the same colour. I learnt to use layers of paint to build the colours and I had to remember not to overload the brush with paint. I dabbed the brush and thought carefully about brush stroke direction to create sharp edges and lines. I really liked painting my sunflowers because I had fun and my picture looks like the flowers I could see.

Vincent van Gogh Timeline

LI: To create a timeline to show the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Made with Padlet

My group worked collaboratively using Padlet to create a timeline about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. Van Gogh was an artist from the post impressionist movement which meant he liked to paint still life paintings that captured a moment in time. We found it really interesting that while he was alive he didn't sell many paintings but in 1990, 100 years after his death, a painting by him sold for $82.5 million!

Tech:Coding

LI: To make the mbot go around a race track.

Today Miss Ferguson challenged us to code the mbot to go around a racetrack. To do this the code needs to allow the mbot to sense the black line. When it can't find the line the mbot moves backwards and forwards until it corrects itself.

I really liked this activity and my fastest lap time 52.94 seconds. Mr Dunn taught some of us how to use a formula to work out the speed. My speed was 0.17 metres per second which meant I came in 8th.

Careers - Cook

LI: To create a DLO about a job you found interesting by taking a careea quest

This week we were learning about careers. I like careers because I get to see the possbile jobs I could do when I grow up. I want to be a cook when I grow up. This is because I like food, and I enjoy cooking food in my own time. My favorite food is butter chicken. I want to be a restaurant owner, so other people can buy my food. I like cooking, so this will be a good job for me. This subject is interesting, and my favorite part about this topic, was all the choices I had.

Periscopes

L.I. To explain how periscopes work

Mr Johnston came and taught us  what periscopes are, how they are used and uses them. We found out that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. That means if the light hits the mirror at 45 degrees it reflects the light back at 45 degrees. It was fun because if light goes into a mirror it can bounce back.

Light Facts

LT: To share 5 facts about light that we find interesting.

We worked collaboratirely to create a DLO that shows facts about light .one facts that
interests me is light will travel in a completely staright line.

Evaluating a Text

LI: To read the information in the text, think about what you have read and form an
opinion

We read the story ‘The Protest March’ then made connections between what is
happening in the world now. We used the information in the story and our prior
knowledge to help us form an opinion.

How to make hot cake

LI: To structure and write a procedural text

For writing we have been learning how to write a procedural text. To do this we used the recipe we followed at Tech. Thisprocedure tells the reader how to make hot cakes. Before we wrote this we worked collaboratively to order the pictures Mrs Anderson took of us making the hotcakes. Once we had done that we matched each photo with a verb. A verb is an action word and tells anyone following the recipe what they need to do. After that we use the verbs as sentence startersand collaboratively wrote a list of instructions.
